Directed by Junaid Syed
I have seen quite a few film adaptations of the H G Wells novel The War Of The Worlds over the years and do enjoy them all. Its a classic story and one I do like seeing a new telling of it, especially if its told from a slight different angle which is definitely the case with War of The Worlds: The Attack, a 2023 film by director Junaid Syed. In The War Of The Worlds: The Attack, the story is relocated to modern day from its original Victorian times setting, and we follow the martian invasion of Earth through the view point of three college students. Herbert (played by Sam Gittins), Ogilvy (played by Alhaji Fofana ) and Hannah (played by Lara Lemon) who are also studying astronomy and who quickly realise that a crashed meteor isn’t a meteor at all. When the realisation kicks in that Earth is under attack, the three friends do what they need to do to survive this deadly attack.
War of The Worlds:The Attack is such a fun film and would be a great choice for an entry point into the War of the Worlds films for a family viewing (other than reading the book of course) I don’t know that this is a family film but it only has a single swear word in the film, and any scenes of violence aren’t gratuitous so yes I would say this is a perfect choice for a family film evening. I do have to also add that whilst I’m sure the budget for the film wasn’t huge, the fact it doesn’t have a huge budget doesn’t affect the film in any way at all. The effect shots of the martian tripods look great and the scenes involving heat rays and destruction look great, but for me the highlight of the film is the chemistry between the characters, and the friendship between Oggy, Herbert and Hannah is wonderful and I could easily have watched far more of those, the chemistry of them comes across wonderfully. So whether you’ve seen The War of the Worlds story told before. or haven’t seen it all. I’m still recommending you check out War of the Worlds:The Attack. It brings the modern world into the story but still keeps many of the things we love about the classic story.
The War of The Worlds: The Attack is available now on DVD and also Video on Demand.

Thanks so much for this review. I was one of the writers and I’m really happy you appreciated the chemistry between the characters as it was something we were really keen to create.
