A new clip has been released from the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black. Starring Marisa Abela (Industry, Cobra, and Barbie) plays the now legendary singer and the film hits UK cinemas this April, with a US release following in May. The cast also features Jack O’Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Amy’s Father Mitch. Of course much of the internet is not happy at the thought of the film depicting the scenes of Amy’s drug addiction and her death in July 2011 but I cant think that it would be easy to make a film of Amy Winehouse without showing the grim scenes of her life which led to her death aged 27. The film will of course not just focus on those depressing and heart-breaking scenes and will of course showcase Amy’s rise to fame as well as her musical talent. In the new clip released by the makers of the film, Marisa Abela is seen performing at Ronnie Scott Jazz Bar in London which Is also something that has upset some ‘die hard’ Amy fans who have criticised the vocal performance.
Of course there isn’t a day that goes by without the internet being up in arms about something movie related and I guess that Back To Black might be the latest in this ‘I’m not happy with this movie’ trend that roams the Earth. I myself have faith in director Sam Taylor-Johnson having seen her work previous in other music biopic films such as Nowhere Boy ( which documents the early years of John Lennon) and whilst I would always advise people to do. Watch the film before you judge whether you liked it or not.
Marisa Abela has worked hard to take on this iconic role and apparently trained for 2 hours a day for four months to take on the role of the Back to Black singer and whilst that is a lot of work, I’m sure many agree that four months of training, 2 hours a day, is far less singing that Amy Winehouse did, so do cut Marisa some slack if she doesn’t quite match up to the legendary Amy. There is no doubt that Amy Winehouse is one of the best singers of this century and making a film about her was always going to be tough but fingers crossed the finished film is as good as we hope it needs to be. It may also bring a new audience to the music of Amy Winehouse.
