From the auteur of body horror himself and one of my favourite filmmakers David Cronenberg is back doing what he does and his latest film Crimes Of The Future is getting the beautiful treatment for its Limited Edition Dual 4K /Blu-ray Box Set.
In the first film written AND directed by Cronenberg since 1999s Existenz, Crimes of the Future certainly did take me back to the Cronenberg films that I saw in my youth. Films like Videodrome, Shivers, Rabid, and The Brood. as well as elements of his more recent films such as Crash and Existenz as well as Dead Ringers. This is pure David Cronenberg as he delves into the depths of a dystopian world filled with body horror and physical modification. Like many Cronenberg films, I never fully ‘get it’ on the first viewing, and find the film I’ve just seen haunts me well after the credits have rolled. Crimes Of The Future did that too and I know that its a film I shall revisit, perhaps not tomorrow but in the very near future. If you haven’t seen a David Cronenberg film, then perhaps this might be be a good entry point, perhaps try something like his remake of The Fly, or his adaptation of the Stephen King book The Dead Zone and then once you’ve seen this, you’ll have had a glimpse into some of the style of Cronenberg, but for those who love and are very familiar with his work. I do highly recommend Crimes Of The Future. It has that grimy look that many Cronenberg films have, such as the ones I mentioned earlier (Videodrome,The Brood, Shivers) Cronenberg is an amazing world builder within his movies and whilst its not a place you’d want to live, its great to visit onscreen. Ive also been listening to the films music score a lot lately (by Howard Shore). Great score but dont listen to it right before sleep or youll end up having the freakiest of dreams (happened to me)
Set in In the not-too-distant future, humanity has been forced to adapt to a synthetic environment and the human body has undergone new transformations and mutations. In a world where diseases and physical pain no longer exist, one man, Saul Tenser (played by Viggo Mortensen – who worked with Cronenberg on A History of Violence, and Eastern Promises ), has the strange and fascinating ability to grow new organs inside of his body. Joined by his partner Caprice (played by Léa Seydoux – The French Dispatch, No Time To Die, Blue Is the Warmest Colour) the celebrity performing couple capitalise on his metamorphosis, showcasing the spectacle for a live audience.
Witnessing this first-hand is Timlin (played by the wonderful Kristen Stewart – Spencer, Twilight, Still Alice) who is immediately stirred by her discovery and shares news with her boss Wippet (played by Don McKeller – Last Night, Blindness) – the leader of a mysterious group, the National Organ Registry – who want to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next stage of human evolution…
