My Thoughts on Oblivion with @tomcruise (No Spoilers)

Today, I managed to check out the latest film by Tom Cruise and the second film by Director Joseph ‘Tron Legacy’ Kosinski.

Can I get it out the way that I was a huge fan of the work done in Tron:Legacy and I also remember seeing Tron on the big screen in 1982.  I know that Tron:Legacy takes a lot of flack from people for whatever reason. Its undeserved (in my opinion)

So, anyways, today I checked out Oblivion and to steal/borrow the synopsis from the IMDB it states

A veteran assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.

Well thats an okay summary but id sum the film up as this.

‘Tom Cruise plays Jack Harper, part of a team whos role it is to maintain ‘drones’ protecting ‘rigs’ that are extracting energy from a devastated Earth.

To go beyond that synopsis would cause spoilers and I am not a fan of those.

I am however and have been since seeing Risky Business on VHS in the mid 80s, a fan of Mr Tom Cruise.  Again, like Joseph Kosinski did for Tron:Legacy, Tom Cruise takes a lot of flack for daft reasons. But one thing cant be doubted. Tom Cruise has been and still is a genuine MOVIE STAR, capable of opening a film with impressive box office.

But this isnt an article going over how impressive the career of Tom Cruise is, and it is. this article is to highly recommend Oblivion.

Is the storyline the most original one ever done on film? No.

Does it need to be? No.

Is the film entertaining? Hell yes!

its extremely well put together in every way. from the epic landscapes, the technology used in the film. Even the CGI is excellent (and I am usually one to complain about overuse of CGI in a film)

The Score by Anthony Gonzalex, M.8.3, and Joseph Trapanese is one of the best scores I have heard all year and perhaps some of the best music since the Daft Punk score for Tron:Legacy.

I have heard some people comparing Oblivion to several other films and whilst yes you can see other film connections within the movie, Oblivion doesnt try to be the most original film in the world, any connections that I saw between Oblivion and other unnamed films I hold with a light hearted fondness. I wont name those films because of spoilers.

So basically Oblivion impressed me a lot. It did EXACTLY what it needed to and that was to entertain me and give me escapism for a couple of hours.

A huge thanks to all the cast and crew for the film and as Im sure all the Tom Cruise fans will go and see it. Id like to recommend to all science fiction fans and all fans of films that entertain. Go see it.
