Airborne (2012) by @DominicBurns

A total credited cast of 40 people.

Filmed mainly on one set of an airliner.

I dont know the budget of the film but knowing the size of most British films I am sure its not a huge budgeted project.

It must be a nightmare to make indie British films. But over the past month I have seen so many excellent demonstrations of low budget but wonderfully executed indie film making by many directors and producers from the UK.

Today I am adding another Dominic Burns film to that list. Earlier in the month I watched UFO A low budget film which looked like it cost far, far more than it did and a film that I was nervous about watching (because I spent a long time researching the UFO phenomenon and am hard to please when it comes to films about aliens) But Ivery much enjoyed the film UFO as well as the technical talent of putting the flight together.

Today I am watching a film that for some reason has been on my ‘watch’ list for a while now. I am getting around to watching that today.

airborne

Airborne is a film set on a transatlantic flight to New York. A small handful of characters all travelling for their own reasons on a near deserted flight.

Within a short while we know that something strange is going on. But what?

No plot spoilers here. I promise.

On thinking what to write about this film. I felt it reminded me of some films from the 60s and TV shows like The Outer Limits or Rod Serlings The Twilight Zone. Upon reading some quotes from Dominic Burns he also describes the film as a tongue in cheek film like The Twilight Zone. Great minds think alike eh.

If you watch Airborne with the mindset of Twilight Zone,it works wonderfully. The storyline is bonkers (in a fun way) and the wide range of characters is wonderfully done.

From Jimi Mistry’s frequent flyer, to Alan Ford’s loud mouth angry first class traveler ,also Simon Phillips gets the most laughs with his everyman ‘says what he thinks’ role. I never tire of seeing Simon Phillips in whatever role he plays. I must have at least 10 films in my collection that have his name on the credit.

It also wouldnt be fair to leave out a small but memorable constant-talking role of Bob’who is in fact played by Director Dominic Burns.

All in all I really enjoyed Airborne. It was that it needed to be. A well put together British Indie film which didnt feel 100% British with the likes of Mark ‘Luke Skywalker’ Hamill & Julian ‘Empire Strikes Back’ in two of the roles.  This film is fun. Its not scary but to be honest I dont think it is meant to be. Tongue in Cheek Fun Romp would be my phrase. It works.

Do check it out.

I only have two downside comments.

1: No Special Features on the DVD. Id love to have heard more about the production of the film.

2: Dominic Burns hasnt made as many films as id like him to have made.

Looking down his filmography on his IMDB page.

Dominic has directed four films and other than 2011’s How To Stop Being A Loser. I have seen all the films he has directed. I need to track that one down just to get 100% completion)

Here is the trailer for the fun Airborne.
