Venturing into The Witcher before Season 4 airs.

I was aware of the games but hadn’t played them. and in 2019 when the first season of the television show aired it wasn’t a show that I leapt onboard with. (a case of too many shows and not enough time to watch them all) and so 6 years after Season One began, I am finally leaping into the world of The Witcher as Season 4 drops onto Netflix tomorrow (October 30th)  So for those (and that included me until a few days ago) The Witcher is a dark fantasy TV series (and video game series) based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski (there are nine books at the moment in the series) The Witcher follows the adventures of Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill in the first three seasons of the show) , a monster hunter known as a Witcher. Geralt is gifted with supernatural strength and skill (which definitely comes in handy), he navigates a morally complex world filled with magic, war, and betrayal. In the episodes I’ve seen the show weaves together the stories of three central figures: Geralt: Yennefer of Vengerberg (played by Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress seeking control over her own fate; and Ciri (played by Eamon Farren) , a young princess with mysterious powers tied to the future of the Continent.

Seasons 1, 2 and 3 of the show explore Geralt’s transformation from a lone wanderer into a protector and father figure for Ciri all set in the world of political chaos and there are prophecies thrown into the mix also. For thsoe who like to watch a tv show whilst scrolling on their phone. DONT! The Witcher tells its tale(s) in a non linear way and so you do need to give this show your attention and you will be rewarded for it with the quality of the series. I really enjoyed The Witcher and whilst binge watching usually isn’t my thing. I wanted to get all caught up in time for Season 4 which airs soon. I’m glad I did! Everything about this show is great, well almost everything. I am not a huge fan of the ‘toss a coin’ song that became a bit of an ear worm a while back in a previous workplace and hearing it in the show brought back that ear worm trauma! But thats a tiny detail, Other than that I really enjoyed (finally) checking out this series and will be headed into Season 4 tomorrow when it drops. It will be interesting to see how the casting change affects the show (I suspect it wont affect it too much) Henry Cavill departed the role of Geralt and in Season 4, that role is now being played by Liam Hemsworth. Hes a good actor and im sure will just do just fine in the role.  Also Peter Mullan is replacing Kim Bodnia as Geralt’s mentor and father figure Vesemir. Nothing at all against Kim Bodnia, but I am excited about Peter Mullen joining the show. Peter is one of those actors who I will watch, whatever they are in and haven’t been let down yet.

I was taking a peak at the cast list for The Witchers opening episode (thankfully it doesnt mention a plot- I hate spoilers) and can see some interesting names in there. Laurence Fishburne will be playing the role of Regis, and Edmund Kingsley will be playing Jocephus of Muroc, Ive been a fan of Edmund’s for years having seen him in the Dominic Burns directed war drama Allies which came out in 2014. Crazy to think that Allies is an 11 year old film now. Time flies!. I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of Allies in that year and hanging out with many of the cast and crew was and still is one of my life highlights. Since that time. I have followed the career of many of the ‘Allies’ and I always enjoy seeing them pop up on screen. I’m very curious and excited to see who Jocephus of Muroc is and how Edmund Kingsley portrays him. I shall find out soon.

Check out The Witcher Season 4 when it arrives on Netflix on the 30th of October 2025.
