One of the films that always finds itself on the ‘what are the best horror films ever made’ lists is 2009’s Martyrs. from director Pascal Laugier and it 100% deserves to be there. I used to listen to a lot of horror focused podcasts and the topic would come up a lot ‘what horror films do I need to see?’ and Alongside Lucky McKee’s The Woman, Inside by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, was Martyrs, Easily one of the best French horror films I have seen and its not a film for the super sensitive. Martyrs has now been released on 4K UHD from Eureka Entertainment and if you are a horror fan who hasn’t seen this masterpiece. Then I highly recommend you treat yourself.
In 1971, a young Lucie Jurin (played by Jessie Pham) manages to escape from a slaughterhouse in which she has been subjected to unspeakable torture. Placed in an orphanage, she forms a strong bond with Anna (played by Erika Scott), who tries to help her to recover from her trauma. Shifting forward to 1985 and now in adulthood, Lucie (now played by Mylène Jampanoï) breaks into the isolated home of the Belford family, believing that they were involved in the horrific abuse she suffered in childhood. When she receives a call from Lucie, Anna (now (played by Morjana Alaoui) rushes to her aid – but soon comes to regret ever having set foot in the Belford house, where she will experience things beyond human comprehension.
