Lets venture into Bodysnatch from Writer/Director Louis Benjamin Del Guerico ( Bright Eyes) which has just dropped into Amazon Prime courtesy of Cockerel Entertainment
Steve (played by Reese Mishler Fog City & Smiley Face Killers) is a recent college graduate who returns to his hometown to reconnect with his conspiracy loving best friend, Jermey (played by Paul Woolfolk. How To Get Away With Murder), and Emma (played by Sarah Davenport. Stitchers), the dream girl that got away. While on a ride along with the fun-loving (aka bonkers and unprofessional) police officer, Marcus (played by Christopher Wilburn) , they run into a problem that’s out of this world… literally and this sets us up for the film we are spending time with a bonkers insane popcorn evenings entertainment.
Now if you go into movies nowadays expecting everything to be The English Patient, or The Godfather, or to look like a $250m budget movie then perhaps Bodysnatch isn’t the movie for you. If you expect every film you see to be up for an Oscar or to change your life, then also. Bodysnatch might not be the film for you. I’m lucky enough never to have lost that ‘movie fan’ experience even though I watch around 300 films a year. Im not a critic, im a fan of films, of all genres (well all except musicals) Some films I like, some films I don’t, some films I think are okay. I don’t expect a movie to shake my life to its core but nor do I go into every film thinking its going to suck! I’ve always managed to keep my anticipation level ….well level and to go into a film not really knowing what to expect from the film I am about to see. This works well for me and so when I press play on a film and I am presented with a fun ride like Bodysnatch it makes it all the more enjoyable and I love that!
“Bodysnatch” which was first released in 2017 is EXACTLY the kind of hidden gem that reminded me what it was like when I used to stumble across a long-lost VHS treasure while digging through the shelves of my local video store back in the day.. From the films opening moments, the tone of the film perfectly captures that late-night-movie vibe that is made perfect if you have snacks, and some drinks. Bodysnatch is a great recipe of sci-fi, thriller, and super cheesy fun. Watching it transported me right back to the 80s and 90s when every mysterious VHS tape promised weird thrills and unexpected twists.(often the films didn’t deliver, but very often they did and Bodysnatch hits the nail on the head to perfection.
The characters are colorful, the pacing keeps things moving, and there’s a scrappy energy to it that feels like the kind of cult flick you’d pass along to friends saying, “You have to check this one out.”
“Bodysnatch” may not have the big studio polish, but that’s a huge part of its charm. Nowadays it would be easy (well, not easy but do-able) to turn in a $100m version of this story and I am pretty sure it would lack the charm, the humour and the genuinely lovely spirit that this film has in its current form. I don’t know how much Bodysnatch cost and I don’t need to know. What I do know though is that for me (and opinions vary) this film was a perfect nights entertainment and I wouldnt change a thing even if i could.
Bodysnatch is weird, Bodysnatch is wild and Bodysnatch is stupid in places (and I mean that as a compliment) and I loved it. It was a total throwback to the kind of films that made late-night movie marathons so addictive and I really miss those days. Sometimes we just need a stupid crazy film to help take our minds of the everyday world. and if Bodysnatch was a dart! It hit a bullseye. Treat yourself to 80 minutes of insanity, and laugh with it!
