Ill be honest, I hadn’t even heard of the film Enemy Territory before Id seen the film even though that during the 80s when the film was released I pretty much watched everything that I could get my hands on. Somehow over the years Enemy Territory became one of those ‘lost films’ that didnt make the transition from VHS to DVD but thankfully Arrow Video are solving that problem and are giving film fans a treat by releasing Enemy Territory on bluray and with a bunch of lovely special features too.
For those who want a nice short non spoiler pitch for Enemy Territory ill give that to you. Enemy Territory, released in 1987 is a gem of an action-thriller filled which is filled with guns, street gangs and danger round every corner. Enemy Territory would fit into the type of movie that films like Class of 1984, The Warriors, and to a certain extent Bronx Warriors would sit along side. You know the type of film. A street gang rules the area but come up against someone or someones that just want to get out of the gang territory in one piece. Pure fun popcorn film! I loved it and I do totally recommend that its worth a ‘blind buy’ if you want to increase your movie collection.
Down-on-his-luck insurance salesman Barry (played by Gary Frank) finds himself trapped in an apartment building on the wrong side of town with a street gang called “The Vampires” led by The Count (played by Tony Todd) who are out for Barry’s blood. With the help of a telephone repairman (played by Ray Parker Jr., yes he of Ghostbusters fame), a disabled Vietnam vet (played by Airwolf’s Jan-Michael Vincent), and the granddaughter of his client (played by Stacey Dash in her cinematic debut), Barry must fight for his life to make it all the way down from the top floor in the hope of getting out alive.
Directed by Peter Manoogian (Eliminators,Arena), photographed by Ernest Dickerson (Do the Right Thing) Enemy Territory totally deserve its cult classic status and is easily a film that I would recommend as a ‘blind buy’ if you aren’t familiar with the film (as I was) The limited edition also features some great special features and whilst not a long list and there are only two featurettes, the quality of those special features is great. Hearing these newly recorded interviews with Ernest Dickerson and also Gary Franks is charming and you can see they both have such a fondness for this film and really enjoy taking a look back to its filming all those years ago.
Add to those two featurettes the full length commentaries and you are around the 3 and a half hours worth of extra features which will take you through pretty much everything you need to know about Enemy Territory.
