When it comes to physical media and limited edition sets, its not easy going into the viewing of a film without knowing anything about it beforehand. Physical media costs money and its certainly risky to put down your money, buy a bluray or a limited edition set without knowing anything about the film. However. IF you do want to take a gamble on a film then I highly recommend you take that gamble with Second Sight’s release of When Evil Lurks. If you like your horror films, especially those that aren’t from the mainstream franchises then When Evil Lurks is for you! I must admit that when I first started watching the film i wasn’t sure if it was for me, Im not a huge fan of possession films (other than The Exorcist) so knowing that When Evil Lurks was setting out to be a film about possessions, I did think ‘hmm is this film for me’ Well. Without going into any further details about the plot I will say that Demian Rugna who wrote and directed When Evil Lurks has expertly managed to do something very different with this possession movie and very quickly turned my doubts into ‘wows’ and over the near 100 minutes run time, I was on the edge of my seat and my heart was pounding. When Evil Lurks certainly isnt for the squeamish and when the film needs to show violence, it does it brilliantly and never even gets close to being ‘over the top’
Demián Rugna’s Argentinian horror had everyone talking on its World premiere and garnered awards galore including Best Film at Sitges Film Festival, Best International Film at Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and a double win at Gérardmer Film Festival – the Audience Award and Critics Award and having now seen the film, I can 100% see why it has gained the praise and awards that It has. Its really well acted, wonderfully shot, and deserves its place on many ‘best horror films of recent years’ lists that Im sure are out there.

New audio commentary by Author Gabriel Eljaiek-Rodriguez
It Was Always There: a new interview with director Demián Rugna. This subtitled featurette runs for 28 minutes and details where the film came from, and talks about getting the film to the screen.
We are also treated to a couple of featurettes featuring the two main actors in the film Tragedy is Inevitable: a new interview with actor Ezequiel Rodríguez (23 minutes) and We Made a Movie: a new interview with actor Demián Salomón (18 minutes) which make for a great look back at the film from the main stars.
Stripped to the Bone: a new interview with actor Virginia Garófalo (19 minutes) Virginia plays the role of Sabrina in the film and I enjoyed hearing her stories about the making of the film.
Terror and the Unknown in When Evil Lurks: a video essay by Mike Muncer. Mike has done some other video essays on several Second Sight Films and whilst they are short (this one runs for around 9 minutes) they are really well put together and well worth checking out.
So whilst the featurettes on this release dont add up to a huge amount when it comes to run times, they do make up for that with the quality of them which when you add to that that full length commentary, you will easily learn pretty much everything you need to know about one of the gems of the horror film world.
Second Sight Films once again prove they are the best in the boutique release world when it comes to genre films with this fantastic film that’s been given the top of the range treatment when it comes to its packaging, the sound and picture, and the special features.
