Its bonkers to think that The Nice Guys is now 9 years old. If someone asked me to guess the films age, Id say that perhaps it came out 4 years ago. Time flies. The Nice Guys is such a fun film in ever single way and its a film that should most definitely have made more at the box office. For around a $50m budget, the film brought in just over $70m globally which is insane for this film. But since when does box office =quality film. The Shawshank Redemption only brought in $29m globally when it was released and The Shawshank Redemption is hailed as one of the best films out there. But enough Shawshank, lets get back to The Nice Guys.
Written by Shane Black and Anthony Bagarozzi, The Nice Guys nearly became the pilot episode for a TV show but that didnt happen and instead we got the movie and the movie is glorious!
Harking back to the great cop capers and buddy movies of the 1970s, 80s and 90s with the perfect comedy pairing of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, The Nice Guys takes us to 70s LA where two private detectives find themselves involved in the same case, a case of a porn star and a missing girl. The Nice Guys earned so much praise from critics and the audiences who saw the film and yet it didn’t make the fortune it deserved. Now 9 years later the film has been given the Second Sight Films treatment and has now arrived in a stunning Limited Edition 4K/Blu-ray Box set packed with new special features.
You can now get The Nice Guys in a brand-new dual format edition, which includes both the 4K UHD and a Blu-ray with the main feature and bonus features on both discs. The UHD is presented in HDR with Dolby Vision approved by director Shane Black. The Limited Edition is set to arrive on 16th June 2025, alongside 4K UHD and Blu-ray Standard Editions.
So lets delve into what the Special Features on the set are .
As id mentioned the limited edition is a Dual format edition including both UHD and Blu-ray with main feature and bonus features on both discs
New 4K UHD master produced by Second Sight Films and presented in HDR Dolby Vision approved by
director Shane Black
New Dolby Atmos audio produced by Second Sight Films and original 5.1 audio mix
Now we get into the stuff I really like. Theres a new audio commentary with Shane Black and co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi moderated by writer Priscilla Page. I havent yet listened to the commentary yet, but I have heard Shane Black chat tracks before and this guy knows how to do a commentary. I cant wait to get my ears into this one!
Then we get into the featurettes and first up is Knights in Tarnished Armour which is a new interview with Shane Black and runs for 36 minutes. This one is great and Shane takes us through the genesis of The Nice Guys including the pitfalls that befell the film before it became the film we now know and love.
Finding an Audience: a new interview with co-producer Ethan Erwin which runs for around 22 minutes,
A Thousand Cuts: a new interview with director of photography Philippe Rousselot. This one runs for 14 minutes
From Lethal Weapons to Nice Guys: a video essay by Leigh Singer which runs for 21 minutes
then there is Always Bet on Black: an archival featurette that is short at the 5 minute mark followed by Worst Detectives Ever: archival featurette which also is a short run, lasting 6 minutes.
We are treated to some cast interviews which total 11 minutes and finally some trailers. Whilst a couple of these featurettes are short, the extra features (not including the commentary) still add up to 115 minutes which is a great length of extras for the movie. Having seen most of the extras on this disc, I can promise you that this is a great package that delves into pretty much everything about this fun movie. So if you haven’t seen The Nice Guys, or you just want to upgrade from a previous DVD version, then I do highly recommend the Second Sight Films edition, feature packed, looks great, sounds great and the film is a hoot!
