From writers Sean Parker & Gavin Michael Booth comes ‘I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead’ the tale of a traumatized survivor of a school massacre who falls in with a group of students celebrating graduation in a cold war bunker turned museum only to find themselves trapped inside with a relentless killer intent on teaching them one final lesson. Currently running an Indiegogo campaign to fund the final days of filming, Sean Parker took some time out to answer the pre- prepared ‘Spending Time With…’ questions. Great answers!
What was the most recent book you read?
I haven’t sat down and read a book in a long while. I read screenplays more often. The latest was Oppenhiemer.
Do you have any ‘props or keepsakes from any of your films or shows?
The killer’s costume and the axe will stay with me.
What is one of your most favourite locations you have filmed or performed in?
Definitely the Diefenbunker, the bunker we’re shooting I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead in. It’s just this amazing expansive space that’s practically a character in itself.
Do you remember who got your first autograph?
The bank
Have you ever gotten someone’s autograph? Which is the most memorable for you?
Robert England. I was Trainee Production Assistant on a movie called Jack Brooks Monster Slayer and my job was mainly with the cast. I spent a lot of time with Robert and he signed a really nice Freddy pic for me.
What is the ONE single coolest movie geek thing you own?
My collection is mainly the movies themselves.
What is one film that gives you the ‘creeps’? Or scares you
I’ve been such a horror fan from such an early age, I don’t get creeped out or scared. The only film that has ever scared me was Superman III. The scene where Vera gets turned into the robot zombie.
(Vera, played by Annie Ross is turned into a cyborg in 1983’s Superman III)
Do you have an ‘off switch’ when not working, and how does it work?
No, not really. Just different gears, I’d say.
How do you prepare for an audition?
As a director, I don’t really have to do much. I like to have a reader with me so I can concentrate specifically on performance and less on the accuracy of the lines. That can come later.
What’s the first thing you do when you get on ‘set’
My mind is on the first scene.
Do you prefer day shoots or night shoots?
Day shoots are certainly easier but night scenes are cooler if you can light them properly.
If you had to make a ‘bucket list’ of people you’d love to work with, tell me one name who would be on it?
Kevin Smith. His movies actually led me to my own film career.
With regards to your own projects? What are you working on that you can tell me about?
I’m working on several things. I’m very ADHD so I have a number of scripts in various stages of completion. I have one that’s pretty simple logistically. Two characters, one location mostly.
Let’s shine a light on some of your past work. Which of your projects are you most proud of?
My early directing was commercial work. I did a lot great ads with the Canadian Wireless Telecommunication Association. My favorite was our zombie PSA.
Out of all the projects you’ve done, which one do people seem to ask you the most about?
I’m a complete unknown so nobody asks me about anything.
What’s the most difficult thing about your creative journey?
Just seeing it through. There’s so many significant milestones when making a film.
Directed by Sean Parker “I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead” stars Mireille Gagné (The Mouse Trap, Midnight Harvest), Allegra Nocita (The Mouse Trap, Breathe), Colby Frost (Butchers Book Three: Bonesaw) , Alexa Missios (My Husbands Killer Affair) and Callum Sywyk (The Mouse Trap). Cinematography is by Caelan Benn.
And, the flipside. What’s the most enjoyable for you?
Seeing the people who enjoy the final product.
I was tweet chatting with Mick Garris (The Stand, Hocus Pocus) a while back and asked him which name springs to mind when he thought ‘Oh MY God i’ve met them’ My reply was George A Romero (Night Of The Living Dead), Mick’s was Steven Speilberg. Who would yours be?
Definitely Robert Englund. Nightmare was my first introduction to horror.
If you can sit down with any one living person and chat to them for two hours? Who would you choose?
Kevin Smith.
Many thanks to Sean for taking the time out to answer the ‘Spending Time With…” questions. Whilst the questions remain the same, I love the fact the answers never are when a talented soul takes part in the “Spending Time With…” series.
