Checking out John H Shelton’s short film ‘Script Of The Dead’ a quirky love letter to cult horror.

I was about to begin this article with ‘a few weeks ago’ – but I now need to start it with ‘around 8 months ago’  Oh how time flies. So, let me try again. Around 8 months ago John H Shelton & I chatted on John’s YouTube channel for around an hour and a half about the legend that is George A Romero. We chatted of course zombies, and Martin, and much more and I had a blast! its nice to appear on someone else’s show as it means virtually no work for me, no editing, no distributions, I just get to show up , and chat for a while about something I enjoy chatting about and so I do have fond memories of that live stream (You can watch that HERE)  John is clearly a fan of Romero and to be honest, John’s a fan of movies in general and if you want to get him talking for a few hours at a time. Just have a chat about Godzilla movies, and you’ll have fun! Anyways I’m digressing. I’ve known John for a bunch of years now and I always enjoy how he makes these strange (and I mean that as a compliment) experimental short films- because he can, and because he wants to, which are both excellent reasons in my opinion. Whether its music videos, poem reading videos, or …well check out his YouTube channel if you want to know more, but I think his passion for making experimental films is awesome and I admire that a lot.

Around 3 months ago John released (which id love to think was inspired by our chat, but in more likelihood it was inspired by John’s love for zombie films and George A Romero) Script of The Dead, a 10 minute short film and I wanted to share that with you here.  Its a film about a writer (played by John Shelton) who is under a ton of pressure from Mr Producer (played by Metal Matt) to write a new script and turns to his friend Ebay Dave (played by Alex Reed) for advice. Its not exactly good advice, but if it was, then there would likely be no film.

Script of The Dead is such a fun film, its quirky, it has its cheesy moments, and both those things are compliments, this isn’t setting out to be a top shelf gore fest or anything like that. Its a fun experimental film made by friends who wanted to make a short film about a genre they love. And they succeeded.  There’s a book used in the film and for horror fans, you’ll know it when you see it without its name being spoken. It put a big smile on my face. If there is a downside to Script of The Dead, its that I was getting into it and it ended, I wanted more.  So I am hoping that John is planning or has already planned a follow up short film- or perhaps Script of The Dead is a standalone film in which case that’s fine! I really enjoyed what I saw and if you can be left wanting more when you’ve watched a film, then that’s a job well done by all involved.  Do do check out Script Of The Dead, and its also worth clicking the Subscribe button on John’s channel as that way you’ll be treated to more videos in the future of a wide range but all fun!  Thanks for making the film John & Co! Keep up the fun work!
