A modern day crime thriller that feels wonderfully like a noir thriller. Ryan Phillippe & Kate Bosworth star in ‘The Locksmith’

From Director Nicolas Harvard comes The Locksmith, the tale of Miller Graham, a professional safe cracker who is double crossed by a police officer and finds himself in jail for the next ten years. Upon release Miller takes up a job as a handyman for all around nice guy Frank and aims to get his life back on track, and his young daughter and ex partner back in his life. Unfortunately movieland doesn’t work that way and before long Miller finds himself dragged back into the world of crime, and struggles to keep his head above water and soon is battling not just for his life, but for that of his families.  I love movies like this. A standalone 90 minute film that may have been released in 2023 but has the feel and atmosphere of classic film noir thrillers. A great evenings entertainment.

Ryan Phillippe (Cruel Intentions, Way of The Gun) stars as Miller, the crook who wants to turn his life around and for me, I think this is my favourite role Ryan has done since Chris McQuarrie’s Way Of The Gun (and if you haven’t seen that film- do check it out) The Locksmith whilst not as bloodthirsty as Way Of The Gun, does have the same feel to it in that its a noir thriller done in modern times. Kate Bosworth stars as Millers ex, Beth who is now a police officer and who finds herself, and her daughter Lindsay, tangled up in this case. Ving Rhames as Frank, well what can I say about Ving. Hes watchable in ever role he takes and as Frank, he is as charming here as he is in most films.  Last night I watched a film called Texas Twister, which I reviewed HERE, and by pure coincidence, up pops Noel Gugliemi once again in The Locksmith, this time hes playing a crooked detective and yes he plays it very well.

The Locksmith is a gem of a film and I do recommend it.  Especially if you want to watch something that’s a standalone, non franchise, not a remake, non IP, very decent thriller that’s well acted, well written, and well directed with a fun (but not comedy) storyline, along the lines of Michael Mann’s Thief, or McQuarrie’s Way Of The Gun. The film also has a good music score by Marlana Sheetz. The original story is credited to Blair Kroeber, with writers John Glosser, Ben Kabialis, Chris LaMont ( Soul Mates, The Inheritance) and Joe Russo (Soul Mates, The Inheritance) also credited.  Great work guys!
