Based on actual 19th century witchcraft trials in Chile, SORCERY – which had it’s UK premiere at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival – features a stunning lead performance from Valentina Véliz Caileo as a young girl using otherworldly powers to avenge her father’s brutal death at the hands of colonisers. Calileo, in her debut role, is a natural, whose debut lead role recalls the likes of Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone and Anya Taylor-Joy in The VVitch. She has a quiet, haunting presence that gives the film a real stirring power.
A 2023 Sundance Grand Jury nominee, and winner of the 2024 Online Film Critics Award for Best Non-U.S. film, SORCERY is directed by Christopher Murray (Venice Gold Lion nominee for 2016’s The Blind Christ), and also stars Daniel Antivilo (from acclaimed Chilean shocker Hidden in the Woods), prolific Chilean actor Daniel Muñoz, and Sebastian Hülk (Netflix series All Quiet On The Western Front).
Like Hereditary and The VVitch before it, SORCERY examines a fractured family dynamic colliding with supernatural elements, and recalls The Wicker Man’s depiction of a community beholden to superstitious belief. Beautifully photographed, haunting and shocking, and dripping with atmosphere, it is, like recent folk horror classic Midsommar, an evocative, unforgettable experience – and heralds the arrival of a wonderfully exciting new screen star in Calileo.
SORCERY WILL BE RELEASED IN SELECTED UK CINEMAS ON 14TH JUNE 2024
