Sparky Pictures, in association with Templeheart Films and Kenmor Films brings you ‘Blank’ from Writer Stephen Herman and Director Natalie Kennedy (Trauma, Down & Out) ) Blank is the tale of writers block and how to overcome in (or perhaps how NOT to overcome it) The story takes us into the world of Claire (played by Rachel Shelley) an author under pressure from her publishing company to deliver her latest book, a book which Claire is struggling to write. She signs up for a month long visit to a fully A.I. operated retreat which all but guarantees that her bout of writers block will be cured and she can complete her latest novel. Complete with fully stocked fridge, a virtual hologram assistant ‘Henry’ (played by Wayne Brady) and a cyborg assistant ‘Rita’ (played by Heida Reed) what could possibly go wrong. Well when people are too reliant on technology that is never a great recipe for success and Claire soon finds herself trapped in this creative haven.
I do love films that are set in limited locations and Blank is a very clever film that reminds us that technology is great, until it isn’t great. The performances are great especially its two leads Rachel Shelley and Heida Reed who’s chess game of wits is of course the centrepiece of the film. We also are treated to the onscreen envisioning of the book that Claire is writing featuring Helen (played by Rebecca Clare Evans) and Young Claire (played by Annie Cusselle) which have that flashback feeling for the viewer)
Beautifully shot and directed, if you are craving for an Ex-Machina type movie, then I do highly recommend Blank. Now I’m now going to turn off all my smart devices in case they lock me in my house!
