The Star Wars Holiday Special, shown late November 1978 and since that date (and on that date) the feature length special has most certainly gone down in history as one of the Star Wars franchise’s ‘WTF’ moments. Over the years its been talked about (and usually not in a good way) and what you will find is that most Star Wars fans know about it but perhaps haven’t seen the full thing (I haven’t) We know that the holiday special featured the first appearance of Boba Fett, it also features the Wookie home world of Kashyyyk, there are also from what I hear, songs in the special. The special also features the core cast of Star Wars including Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew. However also in the cast list is Bea Arthur (who would go onto appear in The Golden Girls) and Art Carney (The Jackie Gleason Show).
Over the years we have heard the tales of George Lucas who apparently isnt at all happy with the special and had either destroyed, or burned, or shot into space- the negative of the special vowing never to let it be shown again. That could be urban myth and so when I heard that Jeremy Coon & Steve Kozak were working on a documentary about the holiday special I was very excited and also very curious (I still am)
A Disturbance In The Force will take us back to 1978 and educate us on what really happened, what went into the making of The Star Wars Holiday special and I’m sure many stories of the aftermath of that insane TV broadcast back in ’78.
May the Force be with the filmmakers and I cant wait to return to the galaxy far far away (well the galaxy back in 1978 anyways) I will be reviewing the doc after I’ve seen it (obviously)
