Conor Allyn’s ‘In The Fire’. Religion vs science in the 1890s, starring Amber Heard & Lorenzo McGovern Zaini

From director Conor Allyn ( No Mans Land, I’m No Longer Here) comes In The Fire, starring Amber Heard ( Aquaman, The Danish Girl), Lorenzo McGovern Zaini (Save Christmas, Dakota), Eduardo Noriega (Now and Then, Mark of the Devil) and Luca Calvani (The Bold and The Beautiful).

Set in the 1890’s, Dr Grace Burnham (played by Amber Heard) travels from New York to a remote plantation in Columbia to treat and investigate the case of Martin (played by Lorenzo McGovern Zaini) a young boy who is showing signs of some rather abnormal abilities which Dr Grace seems to think could be due to savant syndrome but the local villagers seem to think its more likely that the child is actually the devil and has been from the very moment he was born. What we then witness in the film is a science vs religion conflict and that makes for a very interesting tale for the near 90 minutes we spend with In The Fire.

In The Fire has a lot going for it, firstly the look of the film. Of course the great direction by Conor Allyn who was at the helm of this project. I loved the cinematography ( by Matt Bendo, and Simone Mogliè), it looks stunning and the colour pallet chosen for In The Fire was such a good choice with the production design for the film and the costume design. I was ‘into’ this film within the first few moments. Also the casting of the film is a great choice and Amber Heard is excellent as Dr Grace Burnham. In what could have been a template role for this type of film, Ambers far more subtle in her performance and the level of detail she gives to Grace is pretty impressive and more than perhaps others might have given in this type of movie and for this type of character.  Amber has been off screen for a little while now, and this is in my opinion is a pretty impressive return.  Lorenzo McGovern Zaini as Martin is wonderful. He’s chilling, creepy and yet we feel sympathy and empathy for him, hes a child after all and to see the scenes when the villagers are calling for his blood. Its kinda heartbreaking if you think about it too much.

So right across the board, I really enjoyed ‘In The Fire’, a job well done by all involved and if you want to watch a slow burning yet not a slow film, then I do recommend you check it out. Id read a recommendation for the film on The Hollywood Outsider website HERE  and thought id check the film out myself. Im glad I did!
