With some spare time this evening, and no films that ‘urgently’ needed watching (not that films are ever ‘urgent’ (they just feel that way) I thought id turn on my Playstation VR2 for the first time in a few months and try out a couple of the games that I have, but hadn’t yet played. I loved VR(1), and quickly bought VR2 on release, for the first few days I played it, then decided to leave it in its box and not touch it, for some bizarre reason. But tonight I thought it was time to head back into the virtual world and so I did. I didn’t opt for Creed:Rise to Glory, I didn’t opt for Resident Evil Village, nope I opted for Toss, this cool little indie game that Ive had for a few weeks. I wanted something fun, something easy to get into , and something that hopefully wasn’t too difficult to pass some time. Toss was my choice.
Toss tells the very basic story of your character who has crash landed on a cloud planet (perhaps Bespin) and you apparently have to collect parts to repair your spaceship. The game features 75+ playground levels (which are quiet short) in 9 different cloudscape biomes. The game was and is a lot of fun, super easy to pick up, your VR controllers are your hands (and you see those hands on screen) and you climb up drain pipes, crawl along pipes, up walls, even up tree branches to try and collect (just by touching them) the things you need.
The game is very parkour without the running part of course. Its all about working out how to get from one pipe or tree, to another, and up walls without falling to your doom from the sky. You use the trigger to grip whatever you want to grab hold of and yes its pretty much that easy. In a single session I finished the first area and only fell to my doom once. Don’t go thinking that because the game sounds easy, that it isn’t fun. its lots of fun and feels as much an ‘experience’ as it does a game and for me, that’s what i want from my VR time. experiences and to escape into this odd cartoony world away from the everyday one that I’m on before I pop on my VR helmet.
As well as the initial levels that I have done, Toss also features a Challenges mode where you can race against the clock, find as many bananas as possible or master as few grabs as possible in each round. Fun modes that Ill definitely be checking out. There are also a social competition mode where you can compete against each other by time and rank, and follow your friends’ leaderboard ghosts. This social mode of course will depend on how many people are playing Toss, and to be honest, I really do hope this game takes off. Its non expensive ( £15.99 in the UK) and is a pretty good addition to anyone’s VR2 library
