Get ready to ‘Fear the Invisible Man’ OUT NOW. Starring Mhairi Calvey, Mike Beckingham and David Hayman

‘Fear The Invisible Man’ based on the H G Wells novel is out now. Firstly for those who think that everythings a franchise, ‘Fear The Invisible Man’ isn’t a sequel to the 2020 film. Its a standalone film that is based on the original novel.  Directed by Paul Dudbridge, the film keeps the Victorian setting from the HG  story and in this telling of the story follows Adeline (played by Mhairi Calvey), a young woman who is struggling to keep her manor home running after the death of her husband and who provides shelter to Griffin, an old medical school colleague who has now managed his lifelong science experiments and has somehow turned himself invisible (wouldn’t we all love to be able to do that- or would we!) . As the Invisible Man’s sanity starts to shatter in his hunt for Marvel( played by Grahame Fox ), a vagrant who has run off with Griffins scientific journals , his thoughts turn dark and thoughts of murder and mayhem may soon become a reality.  Is there anything scarier than a person we cannot see reigning terror across the city?

I’m a huge fan of the 1933  ‘The Invisible Man’ and it still boggles my mind how they made that film 90 years ago and I love how ‘Fear The Invisible Man’ whilst being a modern made film (but set in 1897) keeps or still has the same ‘soul’ as the 1933 film and even keeps some of the tropes we love about the Victorian horror films (mist filled churchyards, frothing science beakers).  Starting off with a cracker of a pre title sequence, I felt super quick at ease that I was in the safe hands with the filmmakers that I was to be treated to a wonderful film, and I was in safe hands. It paid off.   Whilst the film is called ‘Fear The Invisible Man’ and Griffin (the title character of The Invisible Man) is what we would think of as centre stage, I would perhaps say that more centre stage is Mhairi Calvey as Adeline. Mhairi is great in the film and more than not, has to act against ‘nothing’  I’m sure that from an actor point of view its easier to act scenes with someone else in the scene, and to act against someone invisible must be super tough. It takes talent, and Mhairi has that for sure.

I also have to give a mention to Wayne Gordon as Inspector Adye whos great in the film, and who’s scenes with Mhairi do beg for a buddy series of films with those characters! and of course to director Paul Dudbridge who I am very much looking forward to talking with and asking him what its like to tackle such a well known literary and cinematic character as The Invisible Man.

So if you fancy taking a step away from comic book films and venture into a modem film that will take you back to the feel of a classic horror film, then I highly put both thumbs up for ‘Fear The Invisible Man’
