Checking out Survivors ( @survivorsmovie )

I first ‘met’ Writer/Director Adam Spinks during the production of his film ‘The Expedition’ (which is out now and had a title change to Extinction) and since then, have kept up to date with his work on various projects including The Criminal Audition and more recently Survivors.

Extinction-Poster1

‘Survivors is a story taking us into the scary world of an outbreak. A deadly virus carried by human test subjects housed in a military base that is realized into the public when some of the contaminated escape into the outside world. We see this tale unfold through the eyes of Kate Meadows (played by Joanne Gale), her cameraman Duke (played by Simon Burbage, and Paul (played by David Anderson) who dig deep and try to unearth the mystery and find themselves in the middle of the chaos as well as trying to stay alive.

Looking into the background of Survivors, I’ts interesting to see that the project actually began life as a short film, before breaking out of its limited running time to become the feature length film that it now is. Its also worth noting that the micro budget that Survivors was created with has actually helped the way the film looks and the story unfolds making for a very lonely looking film when it comes to characters but this certainly works in the favour of ‘Survivors’, we don’t need to see crowds of rampaging infect. This isn’t World War Z. Nor does it ever try to be, and that’s a good thing.

So what is on the screen for ‘Survivors’? Well, a well acted scenario of British apocalypse, not far removed from films such as 28 Days Later and Day of the Triffids, where people are alone, and struggle to survive. For those thinking they will be faced with more gore than they have seen before, you do need to realize that this is a film about people trying to survive, and not a tale of zombie horde like chaos. The people in ‘Survivors’ are characters and in this subtle tale of dread, we are treated to what they call a slow burner, not an action packed rollercoaster ride.

‘Survivors’ is another wonderful piece of filmmaking by Adam Spinks, with some mixed camera techniques working in perfect harmony (documentary style and cinematic style), the score is subtle and creepy and the casting is impressive, we don’t see any ‘A’ listers in the cast which would remind us we are watching a movie, but every single member of the cast is great at what they do and pull of that ‘real person’ performance perfectly.
