I love film. Always have, always will but its only in the past few years that I have discovered (or rather they discovered me) the wonder of short films. It was with a short film by Joe McClean called How To Make A David Lynch Film that I realised a project doesnt have to be 90 minutes to be good, and that some amazingly hard and creative work can go into a film that is only 4 minutes or so. Its not often I watch short films but now that my internet speed is back to normal I have found myself venturing onto Vimeo and You Tube more and more, and thats where some wonderful little films live.

Today I had the pleasure of watching a short film from 2012 which runs for 11 minutes and 51 seconds (incl credits) called Celebration. Its a great title because it kind of centres upon a celebration but also it should be a celebration that this short film is out there.

Featuring only two cast members (played by Andrew Elias and Jos Lawton) and set in a single room and in real time. Its two people talking. Yes thats the film. But its what we dont know about these two characters that intrigues. Who are they? Why are they in the room ,and who is the ‘he’ that will phone (or not phone) making things escalate to something or nothing.

So much could go wrong with a single location with just two people talking, but it doesnt. Its wonderfully handled by the camerman (M Roz Hall) and doesnt try to be too flashy but also certainly doesnt venture into dull territory. The two main leads come off well, Andrew Elias (who plays Colin) comes off as creepy and the sort of person you keep at a distance, which is the whole point of the role, and Jos Lawton (as Michael) comes off as someone who both wants to be in the room with Colin but also really doesnt want to be there, he is there out of pur necessity.

The running time is only 11 minutes to please do take the time to check the film out, its well worth it.
