Back in January Greg Hall and other key team members Becky Finlay-Hall and Paul Marlon got together to reflect on the past two years journey over 2012/13 from Bruised to Communion and look forward to where they wanted to go in the future. It was felt the right time to draw a line under BBMF. But dont be too sad. Things progress. Things evolve.

Broke But Making Films originally started as a joke moniker under which Greg wrote occasionally in the Cinematic Rant zine, produced by Editor Paco Sweetman and members of Collective Vision (2002-2005).

The Plague

It was during 2004 his debut feature The Plague had exploded, but despite the critical acclaim and exposure he was stillan indie film maker hustling to make ends meet, and so the name began. Broke But Making Films.

During the post-production and premiere of Gregs second feature Kapital over 2006-07, Broke But Making Films became a blog to chart the journey and record dispatches from the front line of guerilla cinema.

Then in late 2008 two key events occurred: Greg Halls production company Prodigal Productions Ltd closed and the DVD Distributor behind The Plague went bust. So avoiding all paper work Greg set up under the name Broke But Making Films and began bootlegging copies of his own films. Feature film SSDD  would be the first official release from BBMF, as a production company / distributor / brand, and it’s fiery social commentary summed up the DIY punk attitude of the label.

But the transformation from Moth to Butterfly would occur over 2012/13 with the involvement and close collaboration of Paul Marlon, plus the continual support from Producer Becky Finlay-Hall, BBMF came into it’s own. Bursting out with short film Brusied , the catalyst for the successful crowd funding campaign Communion , and self-releasing our the feature film by running the cinema ourself and taking the film on tour.

The team also picked up a Patron in the shape of the lovely Barney Platts-Mills. It was an incredible journey where they all learnt so much about their dedication to the craft, building relationships with audiences and re-affirming the beauty in independent cinema.

Then for all involved there felt a gear shift, with the production of fifth feature film This Is A Robbery  (aka Dangerous Mind Of A Hooligan), plus the coming to fruition of the seeds the team at BBMF had spread over the past few years. It was time for a change.

Now as much fun as the Broke But Making Films moniker had become it also felt like a self fulfilling prophecy, not that the motivation was ever to make lots of money(but would be nice), but the aim has always been to make the best films that they could possibly make with the most exciting people and available resources that they could access. The way the team at BBMF were working and the circumstances needed to change.

The team at BBMF assure us its  not the end of Broke But Making Films.

The Youtube Channel HERE will remain and may have a few sporadic uploads, also the Vimeo Channel HERE still sells all of their VOD releases and the BBMF Website HERE  will remain selling DVD Bundle Packs.

The Facebook Page HERE  may be updated now and then.

They may send out a seasonal newsletter with some more updates.

Perhaps in the future the flag will be raised to catch the breeze again. But for now they will not be producing work under the BBMF title in the forseeable future.

The creative journeys still continue. As a film maker Greg Hall of course has a number of projects currently in very early stages of development, although at this moment he is unsure exactlywhich idea will become his next film, but nevetheless he is busy working away on getting feature number six (and possibly seven and eight) into production.

He is very much looking forward to making some announcements.

But until they are ready Greg and his team are pushing on ‘shoulder to the grind stone’ as they say.

You can check out all of Gregs work and the re-brand from BBMF at the  brand new website HERE .

Also follow him on TWITTER at @DirGregHall

Greg and the team dish out a huge thank you to everyone that has supported BBMF.
and finishes by saying ‘All of you played a part in making it what it was.’
