Has Clerks 3 stumbled?

Awful news to wake up to. Okay its hardly world ending but for film fans and fans of Kevin Smith (me on both counts) It being reported that for now  Kevin Smith’s plans for “Clerks 3,” have hit a major speedbump or has it?

Kevin Smith told Screen Daily that The Weinstein Company, who own the rights to the Clerks franchise, have passed on the sequel.

“[The Weinsteins] passed,” Kevin said. “I went in with a $6 million budget and they were like, ‘Oh no, Kevin. This is too high.’ Bob offered us distribution, but they weren’t going to finance it.”

Some might say that Kevin should go the route he did with Red State ,financing the film himself and taking it on the road, but would that work for a film whose rights belong to The Weinsteins.

But think on this. If Kevin has asked the Weinsteins to budget the film, and they said no. Does that enable Kevin to take the film around to other studios or perhaps fund the film himself with written permission from Bob and Harvey (Weinstein) saying that he can do that. Is this all a very smart move from a very smart businessman and filmmaker.

Very sad news to hear that Clerks 3 isnt shooting this year like it was due to. I loved Clerks 2 (and the first one of course)

I watched it first when I was working in a video store. A great day, and I wasnt even meant to be there that day.
