The hand of Asif Kapadia ( @asifkapadia ) reaches out for Maradona

One of the best documentaries I saw last year was ‘Amy’ (Oscar and BAFTA nominated) by Asif Kapadia (Senna,The Warrior) Now The Hollywood Reporter is running a story that Asif’s next project will focus on legendary footballer Diego Maradona

Maradona will focus on the footballers career using hundreds of hours of footage that has never been seen and using a mammoth of material from the footballers personal archive. Whilst I dont claim to be a fan of football, I also wasnt a fan of Amy Winehouses music but that didnt stop ‘Amy’ from being an amazing piece of filmmaking about a person I didnt know, but felt I had gotten to know a little better through the feature length documentary. Im sure the same will be said once I have watched ‘Maradona’

Speaking about the project on the site of The Hollywood Reporter , Asif Kapadia said he had long been a fan of Diego Maradona’s, and had wanted to make a film about the man even before he started the doc Senna.

“I was taken by his character, his genius, honesty, passion, humor and vulnerability,” he said. “I was fascinated by his journey, wherever he went there were moments of incredible brilliance and drama, he was a leader, taking his teams to the very top, but also many lows in his career. He was always the little guy fighting against the system, against the wealthy, the powerful and he was willing to do anything, to use all of his cunning and intelligence to win.”

I very much look forward to this project. You can follow Asif on Twitter at @asifkapadia
