High Tension Filled Shark Thriller ‘Something In The Water’ In UK Cinemas Now from Studiocanal ( @StudiocanalUK )

The poster sums this film up perfectly. People+Water+Sharks=chaos. Chaos in a good way when it comes to the film Something In The Water, chaos in a bad way for the characters in the movie world itself.  Will there ever be a shark movie that is as impressive as ‘Jaws’, perhaps not, but that’s okay. 1975’s Jaws was the shark movie to start the convoy of shark movies that have snapped for our attention over the years, some of them good (The Shallows, Deep Blue Sea, Shark Bait, Open Water, 47 Meters Down), and some of them not so good. Yes a shout out to Jaws:The Revenge.

Described as ‘Bridesmaids meets Jaws’ Something In The Water tells the story of five friends who reunite on the eve of one of their wedding celebrations and in an attempt to reunite two of the friends who haven’t spoken in nearly a year, they all take a boat trip to a remote island. Of course with a film like Something In The Water, and looking at the poster, we know that things aren’t going to be a smooth sail and this film certainly delivers on its poster promise. Something In The Water is a highly entertaining 86 minute film featuring a great cast (including an annoying character- but well played by the actor) and a team behind the camera who have crafted a popcorn spilling shark thriller that does what it says on the tin (or in this case, the poster) They don’t go overboard (pun intended) with the shark effects and follow the perfect rule when it comes to films like this ‘don’t show too much’ and this helps the film. Whether the ‘don’t show’ thing was due to budget or tension – it works very well indeed.

Is Something In The Water the most original movie? No, but it doesn’t need to be. People in water, hunted by a shark, film it well and add tension. its a very basic recipe and the team behind this film nailed it wonderfully. This is director Hayley Easton Street’s first directing role since 2013’s The Colour Rush and I hope that Hayley doesn’t stay away from wearing the directors hat for very long. There is so much to like with Something In The Water, although once again I am reminded that when going on vacation. Stay out of the ocean.

Something In The Water stars Hiftu Quasem (Sebastian,Ten Percent), Lauren Lyle (Vigil, Outlander) , Natalie Mitson (The Larkins, No Limit), Nicole Rieko Setsuko (In Her City, Only One Gets Out Alive) and Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart (The Jury, Murder Trial, Ten Percent)
