Six friends hire a medium to hold a seance via Zoom during lockdown, but they get far more than they bargained for as things quickly go wrong. When an evil spirit starts invading their homes, they begin to realize they might not survive the night. Shudder has given me so many wonderful surprises on what is one of my favourite streaming platforms and Host is right up there in the best of the best (so far) Filmed during lockdown, using Zoom, the film might seem like a gimmick, however very quickly I could feel the tension build as I watched the characters on screen. I havent seen a film this clever;y made, since 1999s The Blair Witch Project. and with limitations of lockdowns and social distancing, this gem has come out of creative minds and a talented cast. Great work!
The film might be suffering from ‘overhype’ as I can see people online saying how great the film is, and whilst they arent wrong at all, publicly hyping a film can be risky. Now I know ive sort of contradicted what I have written as I have said this is the best of the best and my favourite since Blair Witch, but you know what. Host might not be for everyone. It might not impress those who arent fans of the ‘documentary style’ of filming, but it impressed the hell out of me and on several occasions, scared the hell out of me!
Go see it and make your own mind up.
