If you crave original films, then check out Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose.

We’ve all seen ‘those’ people online, moaning about how all films nowadays are remakes, sequels, prequels and reboots. How studios and filmmakers nowadays just don’t do anything original anymore. Why aren’t there any new stories out there!  As I always end up saying to those people “there are tons of original films and shows out there, you sometimes have to just do a little digging to find them” I personally don’t have to do too much digging to find original films as I know where to look and know where they are (answer: they are everywhere, just usually not on the cover of the main film magazines, and not often on the big podcasts)

I wont go through the list of original films that I’ve watched this year or even so far this month but I will showcase one that I watched very recently and if there is another film like this then I certainly haven’t seen it.

Written and Directed by Adam Sigal, Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose is based on a true story. Yes you read that right. Based on a true story.  Set in the early 1930s’  Paranormal investigator Nandor Fodor (played by Simon Pegg) spends some of his day reading his ‘fan mail’, or rather he gets his assistant Anne (played by Minnie Driver) to read the highlights of those letters to him. When one letter grabs his attention, Nandor and Anne head off to the Isle of Man to see if the story of Gef The Talking Mongoose who lives with the Irving family is in fact true or a load of old tosh!

Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose has such a charm to it and whilst you will of course start off the film wondering what on earth you are watching (but in a good way), you’ll soon settle into the story and if you are like me, you’ll end up joining in with the hysteria and really feeling the need to know whether Gef is a real talking mongoose or just some sort of mass hysteria. Its tricky to talk about the film without giving any spoilers away and you’ll thank me for not giving anything away once you’ve seen the film and I do highly recommend seeing the film if you want to be charmed, puzzles, and wonderfully entertained by the craziest of tales and just keep reminding yourself- this is based on a true story.  You’ll also love the cast. I’ve already mentioned Simon Pegg, and Minnie Driver, and they’re both great in the film. The cast also features Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future), Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones), Edmund Kingsley (Allies) as Houdini, Gary Beadle (TVs The Gentlemen) and Neil Gaiman (very famous author). Oh and there’s a lovely little cameo from one of the films producers Mr Dominic Burns. Treat yourself to a well acted, beautifully filmed bonkers tale, put up your feet and be enthralled by the tale of Gef, The Talking Mongoose.
