Jonny Tull, founder of Tull Stories, commented: “Tull Stories is built on a foundation of independent cinema exhibition in the UK, and we’re delighted to be working with Jon and Anna on their film A Clever Woman. These are filmmakers who are prolific and who have created exciting, inspiring work in a truly independent and unique fashion. We can’t wait to take A Clever Woman to cinemas, and to celebrate these talented artists and their oeuvre.”
Tull Stories, in association with Jon Sanders Films, have announced the World Premiere of A Clever Woman will be taking place at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. A Clever Woman is coming to UK cinemas in early 2023 and to celebrate the release, Tull Stories are excited to share the first look at the poster and trailer for the film.
Directed by Jon Sanders, the film stars Josie Lawrence (Enchanted April, Back to the Garden), Tanya Myers (Control, Back to the Garden) and James Northcote (The Imitation Game, Anna Karenina). Anna Mottram (Back to the Garden, Painted Angels), who plays Monica, co-wrote the film with her husband Jon Sanders.
Beguiling and free-spirited, A Clever Woman is an uplifting and emotionally intense film exploring sisterly bonds and the process of mourning. Sisters and performance artists Phoebe and Dot (Josie Lawrence and Tanya Myers) have returned to their family home on the Isle of Wight a year after the death of their composer mother.
As they prepare the house for its sale, clearing decades of family clutter, they have started to work on a site-specific performance piece about their complex relationship with their mother and her serial infidelities; this incorporates her compositions for pianola, mostly songs using the poems of Mary Coleridge the Victorian feminist, one of which A Clever Woman gives the film its title.
Over one day, they – plus house-sitting musician Tom (James Northcote) and the sisters’ producer/curator Monica are forced to engage with the ghosts of the past and the void left behind.
At once a celebration and a lament, Sanders and Mottram’s improvised production style lends itself perfectly to a story that is playful, raw and always surprising…
A Clever Woman will have its World Premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival 15th August, with a further screening on the 17th August
