“One of the most powerful true life dramas youve ever seen on screen”

April 26th 1986,I dont remember much else about that day, I dont remember the weather, I dont remember what I watched on television that day. But I do remember that at the time, I was 14 years old, living in Scotland and I wasnt in school that day as it was a Saturday However on April 26th 1986, one of the worlds worst disasters happened that would affect the world for a long time well into the future. The story(before after and during) of an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has now been brought to us in detail with one of the best put together dramas and thrillers in years. Chernobyl.

The result of extensive research, Chernobyl the mini series tells the stories of some of those directly involved in causing the catastrophe, and those affected by the nuclear fallout felt across the world. Jared Harris (Mad Men, The Crown) stars as Valery Legasov, a nuclear physicist who is one of the first people to grasp the scope of the nuclear disaster. Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Watson – Apple Tree Yard, The Theory of Everything) is a scientist committed to getting to the bottom of the cause, while Lyudmilla Ignatenko (Jessie Buckley – Wild Rose, Beast) is the wife of a firefighter who was first on the scene. Stellan Skarsgård (Mamma Mia, Thor) plays Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shchergina, leading the government commission from a safe distance.

But whilst this show does have its horrific scenes, this is also a deeply emotional story taking us in the lives of those wrapped up in the event and we see their turmoil at having to make some of the decisions they have to make. Its a deeply moving story and will not only remind you of your own humanity but give you a whole new understanding of how peoples lives are affected by the most serious things that can happen in this world. But in no way is this show sensationalist. Chernobyl is created as a way to honour those who helped stop the devastation from spreading even further but also doesnt shy away from showcasing those who tried to ignore the devastation and sweep it under the carpet with the wish that it would all go away and their work record would remain clean.. .The BBC calls it ‘TV that doesn’t just get you thinking, it stops you sleeping ★★★★★,’ and the Irish Independent says, ‘Devastatingly powerful – no piece of dramatised non-fiction has ever felt this authentic ★★★★★.’ I call it one of the best dramas of recent years and with the buzz growing when the show aired with its weekly episodes, The show quickly becaome one of the highest rated shows on TV, Out rating even The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Game Of Thrones. and whilst im never a fan of overhyping a show.  But Chernobyl is actually worthy of the praise it received.

One of the biggest tips I will give you about the show, is that id recommend watching it in a ‘binge’ format. With its 5 hour running time, it is easily the sort of drama you can watch in a single day (or afternoon in my case) I started watching Episode 1 at 12:15pm on a Friday, and by 7:20 that evening I had completed the show and rushed off to work.Whilst the show is a series, it felt like it worked better as a lengthy movie and thats how I think you should watch it.
