Some of the best news today has been that one of my favourite actress Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead, Exam, The Woman,) is expanding her creativity even more with her directorial debut film ‘Darlin’ The news was announced today by The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive article entitled “Cannes: ‘Walking Dead’ Star Pollyanna McIntosh Unveils Directorial Debut ‘Darlin’
You can read that full article HERE or you can read my thoughts on the article and the news right here. Or you can do both.
2011’s The Woman ( Directed by Lucky McKee and based on the book by Jack Ketchum) blew me away when I first saw it, having heard pretty much every horror outlet saying how fantastic it was, and you know what. They werent wrong. To this date, The Woman is still one of my favourite horror films but also my favourite films and whilst lead actress Pollyanna McIntosh has done many great roles over the years, I have to say that this is currently my favourite. Telling of a ‘savage’ woman who is captured by an ‘all-American family’ who decide to civilise her The Woman isnt an easy film to watch but my god is it a powerful film with fantastic performances by the entire cast.
Not long after I had seen The Woman for the second or third time, I learned that in 2009 a film entitled Offspring (Directed by Andrew Van Den Houten, and based on the book by Jack Ketchum) told the larger story of where ‘The Woman’ came from and whilst it might not pack the punch of its ‘follow on film’ it is still a great performance by the cast and crew and well worth watching. So imagine my excitement today when I hear that we will see more of this world in ‘Darlin’
‘Darlin’ is now complete and will make its market debut at the Cannes. Festival which runs from the 8th to the 19th of May (the day after my Birthday, hows that for a great timing)
Pollyanna reprises her role of ‘The Woman’ in the film and will appear along with Lauryn Canny who plays Darlin, (Amber), Bryan Batt (TVs Mad Men, 12 Years a Slave), Nora-Jane Noone (The Magdalene Sisters, The Descent, Brooklyn) and Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead, Shazam, Halt and Catch Fire), as well Sabrina Gennarino and Thomas Francis Murphy. (from The Walking Dead in which Pollyanna also appears)
After being found at a Catholic hospital feral teenager Darlin Creek’ is whisked off to a care home run by The Bishop and his obedient nuns, where she’s to be rehabilitated into a “good girl” but anyone who has seen The Woman and Offspring knows that this might not be the best of ideas and that dark secrets are afoot. She is not alone The Woman (Pollyanna McIntosh) who raised her and saved her from her previous life, is present in the shadows of Darlin’s psyche and i wont let anyone get in her way.
I cant wait for this film to come out and Im super excited that Pollyanna is at the helm of the third part in one of my favourite film series.
Many thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for alerting me to the best film story this week and also to Pollyanna for being fantastic and working as hard as she does.
