STUDIOCANAL has revealed that a stunning new 4K restoration of CHAPLIN, the BAFTA- winning, Oscar®-nominated Charlie Chaplin biopic from Oscar®-winning director Richard Attenborough (SHADOWLANDS, GANDHI, CRY FREEDOM), will arrive on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on 16th November via their new STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS label, celebrating 50 years of Carolco Pictures, the studio behind the film.
Boasting a truly magnetic, career-defining performance from Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, CHAPLIN brings to life the extraordinary journey of one of cinema’s most iconic and influential figures – a pioneering artist, filmmaker and the creator of ‘The Little Tramp’. Supporting Downey Jr. is an exceptional ensemble cast including Chaplin’s own daughter Geraldine Chaplin (DOCTOR ZHIVAGO) as his mother Hannah Chaplin; Anthony Hopkins (THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) as his fictionalised editor and confidant; Dan Aykroyd (THE BLUES BROTHERS) as legendary producer Mack Sennett; Kevin Kline (A FISH CALLED WANDA) as silent film star Douglas Fairbanks; Marisa Tomei (MY COUSIN VINNY) as pioneering silent screen actress Mabel Normand; John Thaw (Inspector Morse) as theatre impresario Fred Karno; Paul Rhys (VINCENT & THEO) as Chaplin’s brother Sydney; Penelope Ann Miller (THE ARTIST) as leading lady and longtime silent-era collaborator Edna Purviance; Milla Jovovich (THE FIFTH ELEMENT) as his first wife, actress Mildred Harris; Deborah Moore (Merlin) as his second wife, Lita Gray; Diane Lane (UNFAITHFUL) as Chaplin’s celebrated screen partner and third wife, Paulette Goddard; and Moira Kelly (THE CUTTING EDGE) in a cleverly cast dual role as Chaplin’s first love Hetty Kelly, and his final wife, Oona O’Neill.
Nominated for multiple Oscars® and BAFTAs, it was Downey Jr.’s nuanced performance as the silent screen legend that earned him the BAFTA for Best Actor. Portraying Charlie Chaplin’s life from his impoverished childhood in Victorian London to his rise as one of Hollywood’s first global stars, the film explores the triumphs, heartbreaks and controversies behind one of cinema’s most influential icons.
