Second Sight Films have once again brought movie gems to our home screens with the release of Norwegian style as the Cold Prey, Cold Prey 2 and Cold Prey 3 arrives in a glorious Limited Edition Cold Prey Trilogy Set, the latest classic horror collection to get the Limited Edition Blu-ray Box Set treatment complete with the obligatory outstanding slew of special features that have made Second Sight Films (in my opinion) the very best boutique label for physical media.
This must have collector’s set is presented in a great slip case with brand new artwork and very in-depth special features including new interviews and commentaries with cast and filmmakers, a 120-page book full of new essays and much more and is out now for you to add to your collections. Cold Prey was a film and a trilogy that I wasnt familiar with until very recently and so I loved delving into the movies and the features on the discs. Cold Prey (2006) does retread that oft tread slasher movie storyline of a group of friends who find themselves stranded in a remote cabin but that’s much of where the ‘ive seen this before’ ends. This time the cabin isn’t in the woods , its on the snowy mountains of Norway which brings some great cinematic visuals to the film and boy oh boy does it work. Director Roar Uthaug crafts a great looking film that whilst slow burns the viewing experience for the first part of the movie, then turns up the tension to a great final act. I miss the days of a slow burn film, especially when it comes to horror films. Yes much of what we see has been seen before in slashers since 2006 and perhaps a few before 2006 but for me this first time viewing of this 20 year old film (and the film doesn’t look 20 years old) was a blast!
Director Mats Stenberg helms the follow up film Cold Prey 2 (2008) and is a great follow on from the first film and so makes a wonderful double bill as neither film is super long. Both films make for a solid evenings viewing and does make you wonder where Cold Prey 3 will take you. Well the answer to that is back in time. Cold Prey 3 (2010) does what many trilogies do, such as Ginger Snaps 3 and From Dusk Til Dawn 3, they take you back before the events of the first films and Cold Prey 3 transports us back to the 1980s where yes we get more slasher greatness but also some back story as to the first and second films. I generally am not a huge fan of prequels but I did enjoy Cold Prey 3. In my opinion its not as solid as the first 2 films in the trilogy, but in all. Its a highly entertaining film and the trilogy itself I thoroughly enjoyed and its wonderful to be able to have them all packed in the same edition thanks to Second Sight Films.

Second Sight are not only known for their great treatment of films when it comes to visual and audio presentation, they are also known for their excellent treatment when it comes to special features, whether that’s audio commentaries or interviews and featurettes. and the treatment they have given to Cold Prey 1, 2, and 3 is excellent. With over 3 hours of interviews and featurettes etc (not including the audio commentary on each film) we are getting over 3 hours of features that will take you into the making of these films. So for someone that wasn’t familiar with the movies until I watched the discs. Im now pretty well knowledgeable in these three Norwegian slasher films.
