With some free time tonight but not enough time to fit in a feature film, I looked to the list of short films that I have lined up to watch and whilst its still early November, I opted to check out the latest short film from Kris Smith (Clowns) entitled ‘New Years Eve’ starring Chris Mills ( Video Shop Tales of Terror ) and Annabella Rich (Eating Miss Campbell). Its New Years Eve and Dani (played by Annabella) and Will (played by Chris) after some online messaging decide to meet up with each other in the real world and over the 30 minutes the film runs for, we see how the date turns out.
Director Kris Smith (and the rest of the team of course) have crafted an engaging short film that does a great job of introducing characters, letting us get to know them, and taking us on this New Years Eve journey all within the short running time. There are some beautifully shot scenes in the film especially the restaurant scenes in their low lighting which makes for a pretty cinematic atmosphere. The story we see pretty much rests on the shoulders of Chris and Annabella in the main roles and their scenes are really good to watch. Will (played by Chris) the awkward shy guy who probably hasn’t been on too many dates in his life and Chris plays that perfectly so much so that we want to kick him up the butt and say ‘hey you’re on an amazing date with a great girl’ stop being shy and awkward !’. Annabella is fantastic in the role of the seductive Dani and it must have been so much fun for Chris and Annabella to play out the scenes and I could have watched a full length film of their conversations. Running alongside the scenes of the date, is a plot involving a police investigation and will these two stories intersect? Well I wont say if they do or they don’t. Watch the film and find out yourself.
I give New Years Eve a big thumbs up! (even though its still November)
