I do love biopics! Always have and I’m sure I always will. Over the years Ive seen some fantastic ones and I can now add Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dace With Somebody to that list. I of course know and knew the name Whitney Houston and whilst I didn’t own any of her albums, I was very familiar with a lot of her music over the years. (the first slow dance I ever had with a girl was to And I Will Always Love You from The Bodyguard (spoiler- turns out the girl was dancing with me just to make someone else jealous, but ah well) I knew various parts about Whitney’s life but certainly didn’t know many of the things that the film delves into .
Directed by Kari Lemmons, Whitney Houston:I Wanna Dance With Somebody traces the journey from the early 80s through to the very end of Whitney’s life (and just in case anyone’s nervous about how the film handles the death of Whitney, it is done very well, not graphic, and uses text on screen to let us know what happened to the vocal genius) Whilst Whitney Houston:I Wanna Dance With Somebody doesn’t shy away from the less glamourous side of Whitney’s life, this isn’t a graphic film and focuses more on her talent, her rise to success and features a lot of Whitney’s music in full performances. Naomi Ackie , (Lady Macbeth, TV’s “End Of The F***ing Worl, (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ) is fantastic in the title role and how on earth she hasn’t had a n Oscar nod this year is definitely a question on my mind. The supporting cast also bring their a-game and Stanley Tucci as record exec Clive Davis is always great when hes on screen (then again Tucci is great whenever he is on screen in any role) Tamara Tunie as Sissy Houston and Clarke Peters as John Houston are perfect as the parents (although spoiler! One of the parents is far from perfect) but their performances make you feel the characters they inhabit and will make you love or dislike them as the story needs you to feel. Out of the main biopics ive seen in recent years. Whitney Houston:I Wanna Dance With Somebody very much deserves its place on my list of top films ive watched this year.
