From the director of some of the best films ever made William Friedkin (,Sorcerer,The Exorcist, The French Connection) directed Al Pacino as an undercover cop pitched into New York’s seedy underbelly in the 1980 drama thriller CRUISING – available for the first time on Blu-ray in a brand new director-approved transfer with a host of special features.
With New York caught in the grip of a sadistic serial killer who is preying on the patrons of the city’s underground bars. Captain Edelson (played by Paul Sorvino) tasks young rookie Steve Burns (played by Al Pacino) with infiltrating the S&M subculture to try and lure the killer out of the shadows – but as he immerses himself deeper and deeper into the underworld, Steve risks losing his own identity in the process.
Taking the premise and title from reporter Gerald Walker’s novel, Cruising was the subject of great controversy at the time of its release and remains a challenging and remarkable movie to this day, with Pacino’s haunted lead performance as its magnetic centrepiece. The making of the film is also a highly interesting tale with talks of scenes shot, that William Friedkin would never be used, and the X certificate being slammed on the film with the head of the ratings board at the time stating ‘there arent enough X’s in the world for this film’ Whilst its been 30 years since Ive seen the film, I always revisit the work of William Friedkin when I can, as well as reading several books about one of the most interesting filmmakers to ever look through a camera lens. I am super excited to check out this release and then head right into the special features. William Friedkin is on my ‘wish list’ of filmmakers to chat with, one day perhaps. If the movie gods smile in my direction For now though, If you havent seen too much of his work then please do check it out. His filmmaking is a masterclass for all those who want to step into the world of celluloid (or digital)
