“The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen,
Ray was a pioneer and groundbreaker in the world of movie visual effects
Ray was a multi-award winner (including a special Oscar and BAFTA award.
What can we say about his work.
I first became aware of the man with films like Jason and the Argonauts, One Millions Years BC, and of course Sinbad and The Eye Of The Tiger which was the first Ray Harryhausen film that I saw on the cinema screen in 1977 (one of the very few memories I have from childhood)
It was because of my love of the Sinbad film that in 1981 I travelled to the cinema to see the amazing Clash Of The Titans and was stunned by the stop motion work in that film. Cinema viewers knew how stop motion worked, but that took nothing away from the fantasy worlds that Ray Harryhausen gave us.
His legacy is pretty much every fantasy film maker that works. Spielberg, Lucas, Jackson will all sing the praises of the genius that is Ray Harryhausen.
I had the chance to meet Ray a year or so ago and I am so saddened that I wasnt able to make it. We all have regrets in life and that one is now added to the list.
Take some time. Watch this genius
